Top 9 election-tech debacles in the history of democracy

vote_deleted.jpg

As most of the U.S.A. learned in the fall of 2000, election technology is far from foolproof. That's why DVICE embarked in a months-long effort to investigate all election technology currently in use in the country, putting all the data on an interactive map.

But before and since the 2000 election, voting tech has been blamed in screwing up the results of several tight races in democracies the world over. As long as there are ballots, whatever's counting them will have a chance to get it wrong. The good news? Most of the screw-ups weren't malicious. We think.

IPhone robot is ambulatory, still wants physical keyboard

Robots are awesome, we can all probably agree on that. Robots made from iPhones are basically an extension of that awesomeness, crossed with an element of unimaginable, ludicrous fun, which is why we're pleasantly surprised to see that such a device finally exists. Using a jailbroken iPhone 3G running some Ruby code, an Arduino CPU, a TA7291P motor, and 4 AA batteries, the creator is able to pilot the bot via WiFi from a nearby computer, all the while recording its view for later playback.

Windows 7 is getting a good amount of press. It seems that people are looking forward to the next Windows incarnation. The demo is eye-catching once the guy gets it to work; not Apple multi-touch impressive, more of a Window’s novelty

Sprint HTC Touch Pro Review

The HTC Touch Pro was added to Sprint's online store recently, so it's probably a good time to publish this Touch Pro review. I have played with the phone for about a week and it's time to tell you what worked and what didn't. From there I hope that you can figure out if it's for you. At the very least, you'll know what to watch out for. If you have additional questions, please drop a comment. I'll try to reply while I still carry this phone around.

Gateway MC7803u

When luxury notebooks come to mind, few consumers are likely to rattle off “Gateway” among the list of companies that offer a high-end product. If anything, the company's cow-spotted boxes and mid-Western origins are more likely to call to mind practical computers suited to Ma and Pa back on the farm. Acer's purchase of Gateway over a year ago has begun to shift that image, though, and the 16-inch MC7803u multimedia notebook is among the new breed of PCs to reflect that push toward a classier Gateway.

I Finally Broke 10.000 Xbox 360 Gamerscore!

I finally got around to breaking 10,000 gamerscore points on my Xbox 360. The achievement that put me over the top was "Sendin' out an SOS" by scoring five stars on "Message in a Bottle" on the game Rock Band Track Pack Vol. 2. I almost got there when I got the achievement for getting five stars on Blondes "Call Me" on the same game. I got them both by singing and I think that it's much harder than guitars or drums.

Psp clone plays retro nes games

Sure, this portable gaming system might LOOK just a little bit like the Sony PSP, but don’t expect it to play any games made in the last 15 years. Another in a long line of cheap Chinese knock-off systems, the 2PG TC8281 handheld plays a mish-mash of questionable 8-bit and 16-bit retro games that come only on special multi-game cartridges.

STC Livebox Router concept

This innovative router design by Franco Marino Cagnina, developed for Saudi Telecom, will have your router sitting pretty, literally. The STC Livebox doubles as an elegant tech-flower vase. The device features Wireless internet, Voice over IP, land line telephone and wired DSL. With it’s unique design, the STC Router bridges the gap between lifestyle and technology. Martha Stewart would call it a good thing. Women especially will appreciate the decor aspect of what otherwise would be just another piece of tech that clashes with the furniture.

Bandai’s Gun O’Clock hanbs-on !

Last month Bandai Japan announced the Gun O’Clock, and the Bandai team was pretty nice to send over a sample for us that we can check how cool is this thing? For those who were under a rock for the past couple of weeks, the Gun O’Clock is a nifty Alarm Clock developed by Bandai and sold in Japan (only so far). The concept behind the Gun O’Clock is pretty simple you just have to successfully strike the bullseye to shut the alarm up (thanks a cute little gun).
