Be Green While You Lean

As you have probably noticed, sustainable designs are very important to me, and finding a functional green design gets me excited. The Barnacle Chair by designer Ania Wagner is made from sustainable wood and lined with a cultivated industrial felt. This chair allows the user to sit in it, similar to bucket seating or flip it over and multiple users can lean against it while seated on the floor. Measuring 30×40x23”, the Barnacle Chair is a modern, green and functional design.

DVB-H concept phone rocks the house

A designer called Jonathan Findlay (you can check his site here) has come up with a DVB-H concept phone called the “Graphite”. Apparently it has/could have a 4-way slider, and runs on Series60. On toppa that, there’s a 3.6 inch AMOLED touchscreen, and also a keypad hidden in there somewhere.

Thirty-Point Art Furniture for Children

You all remember the ironing board that folds up into the closet, the seat that flattens into a painting, and the bathtub that doubles as an eggchair. Well, little Barry and little Michelle wanted some forward-thinking design ingenuity for themselves! My Deer are the wall herd that double as kid-size stools!

Fun-loving designer of this deer-like stool Jeroen Wesselink reports the following: “[My Deer] are available in a multitude of colours. If you don’t need them, hang them upside down on a wall hook and hey presto, they transform into colourful, sleekly stylized deer heads.”

Ive Got Kurage

Or better yet, I wish I had it. Kurage3 is a fiber optic light that by adjusting its curve, creates a brighter or more dimming illumination. The 3rd light in a series of three, Kurage3’s fiber optic cable is 1.5 mm thick compared to its’ 1.0mm predecessors which creates a brighter, illuminating effect. I think I am in love.

Eames Inspired Prosthetic Leg

Those of you plugged into the post modern scene know the name Eames. The duo that brought us molded plywood in every shape and form is aped left and right by today’s designers. That aesthetic could be translated into almost anything as demonstrated by designer Joanna M. Hawley and her Prosthetic Leg concept.

Most prosthethics are cumbersome looking, ugly, and lack humanity. This new leg starts by a 3D laser scan to generate a point cloud from which data is used to create an exact replica, only mirrored. The final product is a combination of art and science designed to function and inspire.

The Grass Is Always Greener On The Other Side, And Now You Can Prove It

Grass Scanner (Image courtesy Alice Wang)
By Andrew Liszewski

From designer Alice Wang comes this peculiar concept device that quite literally allows you to determine whose grass is actually greener. The Grass Scanner pictured above will take a reading from 3 random patches of grass and will then output a Pantone color code that can be used for comparison against other patches of grass. So if you happen to live in a neighborhood where the condition and maintenance of your lawn affects your social status, you’ll finally be able to determine just how sad your life really is.

I HEART this DESIGN

Here in the U.S. this week, one of our most respected political journalist and host of NBC’s “Meet The Press” died at the young age of 58 from sudden cardiac arrest. Bringing new attention to the global heart disease issue, his sudden death was not only a shock but could have been prevented if proper life saving techniques were performed. Proper application of CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) can increase the chances of a victim surviving by up to 50%. Designer Ryan Helps (yup, really his name) has addressed this issue with his “CPR-PAD” design. When applied to the chest, this monitor/aid shows the optimal way to push the chest correctly, clicks when proper pressure is achieved and flashes the power light for proper rhythm.
