In a cool use of search data, Google’s philanthropic arm is tracking queries on illness and correlating it with geolocation data to trend flu activity in the US. The idea here is to try to predict flu trends faster than the CDC normally does based on their methodology. Google in turn works with the CDC to make this data available and useful.

You can find out how this all works by visiting Google’s Flu Trends site.
BTW, you can even download the raw data and toy with it yourself if you’d like.

Transcend announced the launch of its 2.5-inch portable hard drive ‘StoreJet 25C’ with 500GB capacity, which supports USB 2.0 interface and plug and play. This drive will easily fit inside your pocket and guess what, it won’t need any adapter for power as it can do with the little power it will get from USB cable that you connect to it for data transfer! Sweet. Carry two of these and you have 1TB (well not actually but nearer to it) data holding capacity with you anywhere.

Steve Jobs is mad. He’s mad at Canada. Not at the Canadians in particular. but to Canadian telcos who are described to have the most horrid data plans, it makes the whole thing disgusting. Tris from Maple Leaf 2.0 has A LOT to say about this.

If you plan on tossing your old iPhone for the new 3G version next month, you may want to think twice before you do. Just like any other computer platform, you can pull data out of the memory using tools that are readily available. To most people this isn’t a big deal, but to the paranoid this is life or death.

The current traffic report system used by Microsoft on maps.live.com can’t tell you much about traffic on city streets. They only have highways (just like Yahoo or Google, to be fair) and therefore the system isn’t of much help for something other than “should I hit that road now?” or “how bad is it going to be”?.
