IBM to Mark Papermaster, who left for Apple: think about your family

Mark Papermaster is the executive who left IBM's blade server business to take over Apple's iPod and iPhone shop. IBM sued him, claiming that he's violating a non-compete clause in his employment contract. Papermaster has countersued, saying that iPods are obviously not in competition with blade servers.

The wrangling goes on, but there's a fantastic line from IBM, according to one source:

Rocketship Apple: flight continues - iPhone deployed!

Rocketship Apple’s flight thus far has been largely without incident (see here and here if you are wondering what on earth I am on about…) - and now phase 2 has been deployed! The iPhone 3G has landed at my “moon base”, and having been set up, is now performing VERY nicely!

iPhone 2.2 OS asks to rate iPhone applications on deletion

iPhone 2.2 OS asks you to rate iPhone application on deletion

iPhone 2.2 OS asks you to rate iPhone application on deletion

This is definitely one way to get the iPhone user community more involved in the AppStore’s iPhone application rating system. Rather than rely on the good-intentions of the vocal minority, Apple will apparently be pushing its iPhone users to rate iPhone apps upon deletion.

iPhone 3G could go as low as $99

iphone3g-3.jpgAccording to market analyst Charlie Wolf of Needham Research, Apple could drop the subsidized price of the 8GB iPhone 3G to $99 and still manage a 42.3% profit margin:

The financial expert estimates that the average, unsubsidized price of an iPhone 3G in the summer was $666 and so would give Apple a nearly 50 percent gross margin on each sale as well as a heavy subsidy from AT&T of $450. Both give Apple a large amount of space to adjust its price and could see the phone maker drop the price of an 8GB iPhone to $99 while still supplying a comfortable 42.3 percent margin...

New iMacs coming for Christmas?

apple-imac-20inch-24inch.jpgThe Mac Rumors never stop, even when there's nothing to monger about... especially in regards to new Holiday iMacs:

While details remain scarce on what specific updates will be forthcoming, it is fairly safe to assume that no major design changes will be introduced, since the aluminum iMac has provided the template for the new look of the MacBook, MacBook Pro, and 24-inch Cinema display. Some sources, though not reliable, are suggesting a new 30-inch form factor that would retain the black-framed look.

Apple releases new MacBook line for the masses

Rumors of the new Apple MacBook line are all true, and somehow or rather, the “wow” effect of seeing Steve Jobs unveil new products is no longer there since Apple failed to keep a tight lid on its upcoming devices in recent years. That doesn’t mean the new MacBook line are duds, but the initial shock attempt just isn’t there any more. I digress, and will move on to these new Apple notebooks that are constructed from a single block of aluminum with great new features despite seeing a much cheaper entry level price compared to similar class models of the previous generation.

Rumor: Apple to laser-cut MacBook Pro cases from aluminum bricks

Thinner. Screwless. Perfect heat-dissipation. Free from the design compromises imposed by traditional machining processes. 9-5 Mac reports that Apple's forthcoming "Brick," hitherto a conceptual blank canvas on which to project any fantasy, is in fact a new aluminum-cutting process:

Jiminy.

One of the most common criticisms of Daring Fireball's John Gruber is that he too stridently and uncritically defends Apple. I believe Gruber's perspective is better understood not as fanatic, but as someone who gives Apple — a company he obviously loves — the benefit of the doubt based on a history of good faith and positive experiences. Whether that's a useful perspective to you or not is something for you to decide. (For me it is. Now if I could get over his Yankees obsession.)

Report: RIM still leads US smartphone market, Apple takes second place

All the doom and gloom surrounding the US economy’s downward spiral into recession apparently isn’t enough to stifle the US smartphone market. While the rest of the US suffers from weak consumer spending, the smartphone market is a veritable “shining star” of hope.

For the January to July 2008 period, NPD Group reports that overall handset sales were down. Consumers bought fewer mobile phones overall, Smartphone market increasesand spent less per cellphone than in the same period the year before. But, that didn’t stop the smartphone segment from making some serious headway in the US.
